After-hours answering service for home services: how to set it up

A practical setup for answering after-hours calls: forwarding on a schedule, urgency phrases, on-call windows, escalation and the morning report.

Updated October 17, 2026

In short

Forward your line after hours, tell the AI which phrases mean an emergency, set who is on call by day and time with a backup, and let routine callers get a message taken. Urgent calls reach a person within seconds; everything else waits politely until morning, when you get a report of what happened overnight.

Step 1: forward on a schedule

Dial the "always forward" code at close and the cancel code at open, or use "forward when unanswered" all day. Either way, nothing rings to voicemail.

Step 2: define urgent

Write the phrases your customers actually say: no heat, water everywhere, locked out, smell gas. Anything that matches is urgent; the AI also uses judgement on calls that sound like an emergency.

Step 3: set who is on call

Add windows by day and time with a primary and a backup number. Urgent callers are transferred to the primary; if nobody answers in your chosen minutes, the backup is paged, then the owner.

Step 4: read the morning report

Each morning you get calls answered, messages taken, urgent pages, bookings, spam screened and minutes used, plus any message still waiting for a callback.

Common questions

What if nobody is on call?

Urgent callers get a message taken with a promise of a fast callback, and the owner is texted. Routine callers are handled as usual.
